Technical Expertise

Mieczyslaw M. Kokar, Ph.D., President

Mieczyslaw “Mitch” M. Kokar is a world-renowned expert in information fusion, ontology-based modeling, formal reasoning, software engineering, machine learning and the application of these disciplines to the areas of the semantic web, situation awareness and adaptable software. He is the author of over one hundred papers in scientific journals, chapters in books and conference proceedings. He is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Northeastern University. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Information Fusion journal, senior member of the IEEE and member of the ACM. For more information see http://www.coe.neu.edu/~kokar.

Christopher J. Matheus, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer

Christopher J. Matheus leads the definition of VIStology's technical direction and research programs with more than twenty years of experience and expertise in the areas of semantic web technologies, artificial intelligence, interactive Internet applications, machine learning/knowledge discovery and technology management. His prior experience includes R&D positions at Oak Ridge National Laboratories and GTE Laboratories (now Verizon Technologies) as well as management and product R&D roles with a number of Boston-area, technology-based start-up companies. Dr. Matheus has more than forty technical publications, is a Leslie Warner Technical Achievement Awardee and is a former Thomas J. Watson Fellow. Chris obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and holds a B.A. in Physics from Lawrence University of Wisconsin.

Brian Ulicny, Ph.D., Senior Scientist

Brian Ulicny has over ten years of experience in applied research at the intersection of computational linguistics, machine learning, and information retrieval/extraction. He has held R&D positions at Lycos, Ask Jeeves, Lernout & Hauspie, Inso, and Quarterdeck Corporation. He has frequently presented at industrial and academic seminars and conferences and holds a US patent. He completed his Ph.D. at MIT's Department of Linguistics and Philosophy in 1993.

Robert Dionne, M.Sc., Senior Scientist

Robert Dionne brings to VIStology over 20 years of applied research and development experience. His major areas of expertise are description logics, knowledge representation, databases and foundations of programming languages. Prior to joining VIStology, Bob served as Chief Software Architect at Apelon, Inc. and as an advisory programmer at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center. At Apelon he developed Ontylog, a very high performance scalable description logic used in medical terminologies. At IBM he developed algebraic semantics for description logics that enable cyclic definitions. He's given talks at AI conferences and published several papers on description logics, semantics and classification algorithms. Bob has a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Lowell and a M.Sc. in mathematics from Michigan State University.

Kenneth Baclawski, Ph.D., Principal Consultant

Kenneth Baclawski is expert in the area of ontology-based computing, including such topics as the Semantic Web, formal (ontology-based) methods for software engineering and software modeling, ontology-based methods in bioinformatics, and high-performance semantically rich information retrieval. He holds eight patents and has authored over 60 professional articles. Dr. Baclawski is an Associate Professor in the College of Computer and Information Science at Northeastern University and is affiliated with the Harvard Medical School.
